11. Throughout the book there are different types of brotherhoods. What brought them together?
In the book Of Mice and Men there are different types of brotherhoods. One is all the men working on the ranch; Curley, Carlson, Slim, Whit, and Candy. They came together several times in the book. Once was at the end of the book. They came together to kill Lennie. And before that they came together without Curley, to defend Lennie.

12. Do you think Crooks, the stable buck, represents anything or anyone?
Yes, I think he represents the way African Americans were treated at the time. He still gets the bad end of the stick when the boss is mad, because the boss can do that. He sleeps by himself in the stable with the horses. He is constantly referred to by a racist term. This book shows through Crooks what it was like to be African American during the time this book was written.

13. Why does George travel with Lennie?
George and Lennie are an odd pair who travel together from town to town. I think George does it because he feels bad for him. Lennie is not that smart and shouldn't be left alone. Also, they mention Lennie’s Aunt Carla. George may have told her he would keep an eye on Lennie and make sure he doesn’t get into any trouble

14. Was does Curley’s Wife always walk around the ranch?
Curley’s Wife is always walking around the ranch. She always has Curley looking for her. She walks around because she doesn’t have anything else to do. Curley wants her to stay at home but she doesn’t want to. She wants people to talk to besides Curley. She is tired of hearing about fighting. All he does is fight and walk around the ranch doing work and chasing her.

15. Do the main characters George and Lennie remind you of characters from another book, movie, or t.v show?
The book Of Mice and Men remind me of the two main characters from My Name is Earl. The two main characters are Earl and Randy. Earl and Randy are always together. Earl also makes sure Randy doesn’t get into any trouble. They also have the same personality traits.

When reading Of Mice and Men one thing you notice is George and Lennies relationship. They are really close, kind of like George is his older brother. In the show My Name is Earl the two main characters are like that. Earl is always making sure nothing happens to Randy. He keeps him out of trouble and stands up for him when he can’t. George does the same thing with Lennie. Making sure he stays away from people like Curley.

Earl and George are alike in many ways. They are both the responsible ones. George knows exactly where to go when they leave for the next city. Earl knows how to get a house and how to get money. They both take understand things better. They know right from wrong and where to not go. When Randy or Lennie get in trouble Earl and George know how to get them out.
Its like Randy and Lennie should have been best friends. They get easily distracted by different things. They like small animals and always want one. Without Earl and George they wouldn’t be able to do anything. They are also physically alike. Both of them are really big. They look really tough but wouldn’t hurt anyone.

As you can see, George and Lennie and Earl and Randy are alike in many ways. They have the same kind of relationships. George is like Earl. They take care of a friend or brother. Lennie is like Randy. Try to be like the person they travel with, and getting into trouble a lot.

Service Learing Article

Wednesday afternoon, students running around the halls, in and out of classrooms taking surveys that’s right, it’s service learning day. Service learning is a school wide project. Different groups work on city wide, state wide, and school wide projects. Groups organize fairs, bake sales, make gardens, and more. There are positives and negatives views. People also feel it needs improvements.

When some students were asked if they like service learning they said no. One student said it was “Useless.” Service learning does not happen regularly. It seems to happen whenever they remember, not giving teachers enough time to fix their lessons. Mr. Romero said, “I don’t like classes to be shorter.” Julia Fusco agreed. If we do have service learning it is usually on a half day, shortening already short classes. Some students so not even like their groups. Taking to long to decide got them put into any group that had room. Other students are only in groups because their friends are, and are not even interested in the groups work.

As many students that do not like service learning, there are students that do like service learning. One student, Korin Lassiter, in the group Frankie`s Fight says, “It’s a good learning experience.” Which is true. Each group has its own way of learning something. Frankie’s Fight plans a fair. Recycling got the school several bins, and there are so many more successful groups. Students came up with some of the ideas for the groups, Mrs. Klose co- advisor of service learning stated, “The ideas students came up with were outstanding and very workable projects.”

Everyone had different views on service learning, but everyone agreed it needed improvements. Groups do not meet on a regular basis. Two meetings fell on snow days, and we only had about four meetings overall. Civic engagement is one of the three main focuses of our school, Mrs. Klose said, “I think the school needs to devote to it, since it is one of the three main focuses of the school, it keeps getting pushed aside.” All of the people I interviewed said the same thing; more time needs to be devoted.

So some Wednesday’s are chaotic, but not many. People like service learning others are not fond of it. If it were to happen more often people may like it more. If the advisor and principle could take these things into consideration more students and teachers would enjoy service-learning day.

Maturity

One can measure the time of their life through many ways like age, weather you’re a teen or an adult. One way it could be done, through the four seasons. Winter, spring, summer, and fall, represent different phases of life. I’m at the point of early summer. During early summer more responsibilities are obtained. Yet, still a little immature, doing stupid things because you’re older and no one says no. Sometimes your not sure where you’re at and don’t know what to do.

Most teenagers prefer to have fun over seriousness. We do things that we shouldn’t and don’t really listen to others. A story called “Marigolds” has a character named Lizabeth; she follows her brother and friends to mess with an old woman. They shouldn’t be doing this, but that’s how they get their laughs. When you’re a teenager your main focus is trying to have fun. Friends of mine make the dumbest, funniest videos. Sitting in post office box being pushed on a skateboard. Tying someone to a pole and leaving him or her there for 15 minutes, just a few of the funny things they’ve done. Not the smartest things to do but we just try to have fun.

Fun and games go quick as you get older. Responsibilities play a big part in crossing over to early summer. High school students have many things to worry about. Scholarships, loans, college, SATS, and grades make up most of those worries. Our ecnomy is doing bad. No one can really afford to pay for college out of their or their parent’s pockets. All that weight put on the young shoulders of a teenager the result of early summer.

Sometimes I’m stuck in the middle. My schoolwork suffers at times because of this. Good grades are really important to me, but sometimes I don’t feel like doing the work I just want to have fun. Moments like these often occur during my computers class. Computers class is that one class where you can either do your work or not, depending if you mind getting demerits or not. Honestly, the working all day is boring. Do I do the childish thing and not finish my work, or be mature or get over it.

Understanding where you’re exactly at in life takes time. By saying I’m in early summer is my opinion. More responsibilities in your life to me does mean your maturing. Goofing off at times puts me in early summer because mature people take everything seriously. Some day’s people are just stuck in the middle, not knowing which way to go. Do you know where you are?

I Make

We sat in a room real quiet,
No one knew what to say,
Some one spoke up and asked our names
And important thing we do.
Nothing came to mind at the time,
I thought about that question all day,
“What do I do that is important?”

I make people smile when ties are hard,
I can help them realize who they are,
I make choices and changes that shape me,
I open doors for friends in need,
I make people pride with all my accomplishments,
I make my voice heard in a sea of people,
I listen to make important improvements,
These things are important to me,
They help me be me.

Essay on "Beware: Do Not Read This Poem"

“Statistic: the us bureau of missing persons reports that in 1968 over 100,000 people disappeared leaving no solid clues nor trace only a space in the lives of their friends.” This comprises only part of a very interesting poem called “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem”. One reason why I really like this poem would be the death. Death permeates the poem, Ishmael Reed talks about it in a different way. Reed also uses good metaphors giving the poem human traits. Fantasy in this poem also makes it great. People get sucked into a mirror, and people go missing.

The first reason why I like “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem”, it talks about death in a different way. Poet Ishmael Reed, talks about who the mirrors took, for example in one section he writes, “It has taken many victims back off from this poem it has drawn in yr feet…” At first it seems like the mirrors suck people in but as we read on we find out other wise, he starts blaming the poem.

In addition to reason one, I like this poem because of the use metaphors. Within the poem Ishmael Reed gives the poem human traits. One section state, “the hunger of this poem is legendary… it is a greedy mirror”. Reed says the poem hungers, that’s way people keep disappearing. He also says the poem’s greedy because it keeps taking people no matter who they are or how many it already has.

Finally, I like “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” because of fantasy. Ishmael Reed talks about how the lady gets sucked in, and how she sucks people in. He says who gets sucked in, “each tenant who bought the house after that lost a loved one to the ol women first a little girl than a young women then the young woman/s husband…” . Questions are raised when reading it, like why the old sucks people in. Just like that your interested and can not stop reading, just like the poem wants.

As you can see I like this poem for multiple reasons. “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” has great fantasy with the why it uses mirrors and suck people in. Poet Ishmael Reed deals with death in a different way, with the way they die. Metaphors in this poem would be the last reason why I like this poem. So, when your in the mood to question a poem, or something a little different read “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” by Ishmael Reed.

NHD Reflection.

This year during NHD I learned a lot of new things. I learned where to go if I need to find news paper articles. I learned the correct way to do annotations. During NHD I learned how to paraphrase and which sources to cite when doing footnotes.

This year I could have done a few things differently. I could have put more details in about things I didn't talk about enough. I could have put in a few quotes in about what other people thought about her. I don't think I put in enough information about why she started the National Women's Party.

NHD was really different for me this year. Last year I just wrote my paper and than at the last minute put my thesis statement in there. This year I wrote my thesis before everything. I wrote down every website I used, last year I had to keep going back and looking for each one because I didn't think to write them all down.

Annotations.

Unknown.. "Alice Paul's Fight for Suffrage.."PBSKids.. 21 Nov 2008 .
This is a secondary source. They talk about everything Alice Paul went through to get the right to vote.
This is a good source because I'm able to find out how hard she tried to get the right for women to vote.

Bettman, Corbls. "Alice Paul"Women in Histroy. 25Jan2008. 21Nov2008 .
This is a secondary source. The website talks about her family background, education, and many accomplishments.
This is a good source because it does not just focus on her family life and education. They talk about all the accomplishments she made through her whole life.
